What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I was so depressed and unhealthy. I got to a breaking point when I was traveling and the fancy outfit I packed for a banquet didn’t fit. So, in a Florida hotel, I googled exercise in Lansing and GLC caught my attention. I emailed and set up an intro session for the day I returned.
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I was terrified. I was pretty sedentary so I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do anything. However, as soon as I walked in, I was greeted by not only a nice coach but the members working out also greeted me. I felt so welcomed. I’m happy to say that hasn’t changed. I love how we all greet each other, say goodbye, and truly care about each other. It is still a very welcoming place and I love going there.
What was your first “bright spot”?
There was so much I was not good at or couldn’t do at all. The first bright spot was when I found something I could do. As a larger person, my legs carry quite a lot of weight every day so they are pretty strong. As soon as I got to do deadlifts, I was so excited because I realized how strong I was. My second best day in crossfit was when I got my first double under. It took months of sweat and tears and I just fell apart with joy when I did it.
What are you working on now?
My upper body strength. I want to do a whole workout of push-ups on my toes (rather than my knees). I’m making so much progress that it actually seems possible in the next few months.
What’s your favorite GLC memory?
All the laughter. I’ve never worked out with such pleasant people and I love how much we laugh in each workout. Also the music is rocking. A favorite memory is when a handful of people ended up singing along to a song. I don’t even remember the song, just the joy of being with people enjoying what they were doing.
